Calling the Quarters: A Coven Ritual Under the Stars
Written by lyn on Nov. 30, 2024, 1:35 p.m.
Performing a quarter-calling ritual on a beach brings a unique intensity to the practice, with the elemental energies amplified by the surroundings. This coven ritual is designed to align the group with the natural forces of air, fire, water, and earth, creating a powerful connection between participants and the environment.
Begin by forming a wide circle, with the sea to the west. Each member should take a position at one of the cardinal points, prepared with symbolic objects for their element:
- East (Air): Incense or feathers.
- South (Fire): A candle or a glowing coal in a safe holder.
- West (Water): A shell or a small vial of seawater.
- North (Earth): A rock or bowl of soil.
The leader begins at the east, raising their arms and saying:
"We call upon the winds, breath of life and voice of spirit. Fill our circle with your clarity and wisdom."
Proceed to the south:
"We call upon the flames, bringers of transformation and courage. Illuminate our path with your passion."
Move to the west:
"We call upon the waves, ever-flowing and endlessly deep. Cleanse and heal us with your boundless intuition."
Finally, at the north:
"We call upon the stone, foundation of the world. Ground and protect us with your enduring strength."
Each coven member at a quarter point repeats the invocation, further anchoring the circle. Once all elements are called, sit together in silence, letting the sounds of the waves and the winds fill the space. Use this time for individual meditation or a group chant.
To close, reverse the invocations, thanking each element as it departs. Smooth out the circle in the sand and leave an offering—herbs, a strand of beads, or small coins—to honour the spirits of the elements.
